We are at a critical point in history and in this state, and it's time to elect leaders ready to go to Baton Rouge to fight for our communities. We must take action on the most significant issues impacting the people of Gretna, like public safety, expanding access to quality education, and fostering an environment where Louisianaians aren't forced out of their homes by the skyrocketing insurance premiums.
On the Issues
Education
In the overall education category, which includes higher education, Louisiana ranked 46th! A quality education consisting of great teachers, outstanding principals, out-of-the-box thinkers, a world-class curriculum, and the expectation and treatment of all students as scholars are critical to closing the educational gap in this state. As a mother of teenage children and dedicated teacher in Jefferson Parish Schools, I will fight to increase investment in K-12 public schools, reinvest in and expand vocational education programs, and author legislation to push for higher wages for teachers.
Safe Communities
Keeping Gretna safe is my top priority! I will work to ensure that we have safe neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and recreational spaces. We must invest in increasing funding opportunities for police forces and develop recruitment opportunities that incentivize candidates eager to do their part to help protect our communities.
I will also advocate for criminal justice reform legislation that holds criminals accountable for their actions while working with thought leaders on developing programs that help to enhance the ongoing efforts to reduce substance abuse.
Insurance Crisis
Southeast Louisiana has some of the highest car and home insurance costs in this country. Many across the state are being dropped by their insurance companies, and everyone faces skyrocketing premiums. We must take real action to address this crisis, or our citizens will no longer be able to afford their homes.
Once elected, I will propose a bill to start a task force next legislative session and would look into increasing funding for the fortified homes program. This program helps those eligible to apply for a grant towards a stronger new roof. And insurance companies are mandated to give discounts for that.
